Gardnos Meteorittpark
Experience unique nature
At first the geologists believed that the Gardnos area was a volcanic crater. In 1990 the geologists Johan Naterstad and Johannes A. Dons found the answer by studying the rock in the microscope. Gardnos was a meteorite impact structure! 650 million years ago a big meteorite with a 2-300m diameter struck this area. A 5km diameter crater was produced by the enormous amount of energy established by the impact. The original bedrock in the area was fractured and a powder of crushed rocks was forced in to all the fractures. This is the origin of the peculiar rock in this area. It is possible to drive in to the centre if the crater. This makes Gardnos Meteorite Crater to one of the worlds best accessible meteorite craters. A visit at Gardnos Meteorite Crater gives you a better understanding of the forces exposed in the area.
